Real Projects

What Your Teen Will Build

A structured portfolio that demonstrates every skill College Board tests, and goes beyond exam requirements to produce genuinely usable Java code.

โ˜•

Java CLI Application

A command-line application demonstrating OOP, file I/O, exception handling and well-documented, production-quality Java code

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Data Structures Portfolio

Custom implementations of ArrayList, LinkedList, Stack and Queue, with documented time complexity analysis for each

๐Ÿ”ข

Algorithm Showcase

A documented portfolio of sorting (bubble, selection, insertion, merge, quick) and searching algorithms with Big O analysis

๐Ÿ“

AP Create Task

A College Board-compliant Create Performance Task, the written analysis, video walkthrough and code submission required for the AP exam

Course Modules

What They'll Learn

Six modules aligned precisely to College Board's AP CS A curriculum, from Java fundamentals to exam-day strategy.

1

Java Fundamentals

Primitive types, reference types, operators, String methods, conditional statements, loops, static methods, method overloading

2

Object-Oriented Programming

Classes, objects, constructors, instance variables, encapsulation (getters/setters), inheritance, polymorphism, abstract classes, interfaces

3

Arrays & ArrayLists

1D arrays, 2D arrays, ArrayList, enhanced for-each loop, iteration patterns, common algorithms on arrays

4

Algorithms & Complexity

Linear and binary search, bubble/selection/insertion/merge sort, Big O notation (O(1), O(n), O(nยฒ), O(n log n)), algorithm analysis

5

Recursion

Base cases, recursive calls, call stack, classic recursive problems (factorial, Fibonacci, binary search, merge sort), tracing recursive calls

6

Exam Preparation

AP CS A FRQ formats (methods & control structures, class design, array/ArrayList, 2D array), multiple choice strategy, Create Task guidance, past paper practice

Is This Course Right?

Who It's For

Perfect for

  • Students in US high schools (or international students targeting AP credit) aged 14โ€“17
  • Teens who want to study CS, Engineering or a related field at a US university
  • Students who've done basic Python or any programming and want to transition to Java
  • Students who want a strong CS foundation aligned to an internationally recognised qualification

Not quite the right fit

  • Students who haven't done any coding before. Python fundamentals first is strongly recommended
  • Students outside the US who don't need AP credit (our general programming courses may be a better fit, ask us)

How It Works

How Sessions Work

60โ€“90 Minute Live Sessions

Long enough to work through a full FRQ-style problem from analysis to coded solution, the format College Board uses.

Exam-Focused Independent Work

Students code solutions from scratch in every session, no copy-paste, no shortcuts. Exactly how the exam is sat.

Weekly Practice & FRQ Drills

Between sessions, students complete past-paper FRQs and MCQs. Consistent drilling separates 4s from 5s.

Progress Reports & Exam Readiness

After each session, parents receive a readiness update and a list of exactly which FRQ formats have been mastered.

Student & Parent Stories

What Students & Parents Say

โ€œHe scored a 5. His school's class average was 2. His Homtutor tutor knew every FRQ format cold and drilled him on exactly what College Board marks.โ€

David O.

Parent ยท Houston

โ€œI'd never done Java before. Three months in I was writing linked list implementations from scratch. The OOP module is genuinely the best CS teaching I've received.โ€

Adaeze N.

Age 16 ยท New York

โ€œShe had a private school teacher telling her AP CS was 'too hard for her'. She got a 4. The real problem was the teacher.โ€

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AP CS course do you cover. A or Principles?

We primarily prepare for AP Computer Science A (the Java-based course). We also offer AP CSP (Principles) support, let us know which exam your teen is targeting when booking.

My teen's school already teaches AP CS, why do they need tutoring?

AP CS A has a high fail rate even in strong schools. The FRQ section in particular requires a specific approach, writing code that matches College Board's marking criteria, not just code that runs. Our tutors know the exam inside-out and supplement school teaching with targeted exam technique.

Does my teen need Java experience before starting?

Not necessarily. Java syntax can be learned quickly by anyone with programming experience. We recommend at least 3 months of Python or similar before starting. Complete beginners should do Python Programming first.

How long before the exam should we start?

Ideally 6โ€“9 months before. Students starting 3 months out can still make significant improvements, but the Create Task requires time to develop. Contact us to discuss the right plan for your teen's timeline.

Is AP Computer Science useful if my teen isn't going to a US university?

The Java OOP skills, algorithmic thinking and data structures knowledge are globally valuable in CS. The AP qualification itself is primarily valuable for US university applications and credit. If your teen is targeting UK universities, our general Computer Science preparation may be more relevant, ask us.
