What Your Teen Will Build

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ

Image Classifier

Train a convolutional neural network to classify images from a custom dataset with 90%+ accuracy

๐Ÿ’ฌ

Sentiment Analyser

An NLP model that reads text and classifies sentiment, positive, negative, neutral, trained on real review data

๐Ÿค–

AI-Powered Application

A complete app that wraps a trained model with a user interface, users interact with the AI without seeing the code

๐Ÿ“‹

AI Ethics Case Study

A rigorous written analysis of a real-world AI controversy, with structured recommendations, the kind of work that impresses universities

What They'll Learn

1

How AI Really Works

Neural networks, layers, activation functions, training/testing splits, loss functions (conceptual depth without unnecessary calculus)

2

Machine Learning with Python

scikit-learn, feature engineering, training classifiers, evaluating with accuracy/precision/recall/F1

3

Computer Vision

Image preprocessing, CNNs with TensorFlow/Keras, transfer learning, model fine-tuning

4

Natural Language Processing

Tokenisation, bag of words, TF-IDF, sentiment analysis, simple sequence models

5

AI Ethics & Governance

Algorithmic bias, fairness metrics, explainability (SHAP), EU AI Act, real case studies

6

Building AI Products

Wrapping models in Flask/FastAPI, building simple UIs, responsible deployment, model cards

Is This Course Right for Your Teen?

Perfect for

  • Teens aged 13โ€“17 who want to go beyond using AI to understanding and building it
  • Students with some Python experience (basic loops, functions, lists)
  • Teens interested in university courses in CS, AI, Data Science, Engineering
  • Students applying to competitive universities who want a standout portfolio project

Not quite the right fit

  • Complete coding beginners, do Python Programming first, then come back
  • Students who want to build apps that USE AI tools (see AI Creator), this course is about building the AI itself

How Sessions Work

60โ€“90 Min Sessions

Long enough to get deep into a topic and finish something real, not a rushed 30-minute overview

Live Collaboration

Tutor and student code together in real time, shared screen, instant feedback, no waiting between questions

Practice Between Sessions

Focused exercises and mini-challenges to reinforce every module, learning compounds with each week

Progress Tracking

Session notes and project milestones shared with parents after every lesson so you always know where they stand

What Students & Parents Say

โ€œI trained an image classifier that can identify plant diseases from photos. I submitted it as part of my university application. I got in.โ€

Emeka B., 17, Lagos

Now studying Computer Science at UCL

โ€œThe ethics module wasn't what I expected, it was the most intellectually challenging thing I've studied outside of school. My politics teacher asked me to present it to the class.โ€

Aisha M., 16, Birmingham

โ€œShe explained gradient descent to me over dinner. I'm an accountant. I had no idea what she was talking about but she clearly did.โ€

Funmi O., parent, London

Frequently Asked Questions

How much Python does my teen need before starting?

They should be comfortable with variables, loops, functions, lists and basic file handling, roughly 3โ€“4 months of Python experience. If they're unsure, we'll assess in the first session and recommend the right starting point.

Is this a lot of maths?

We cover the maths that matters, loss functions, probability, linear algebra concepts, intuitively rather than with heavy notation. Students who are strong at GCSE/A-Level Maths will find it easier, but it isn't a prerequisite.

How is this different from the AI Explorer kids course?

AI Explorer (ages 8โ€“12) uses visual tools like Teachable Machine for intuitive exploration. AI Expert uses Python, real ML libraries (scikit-learn, TensorFlow) and requires genuine mathematical understanding of what's happening inside the model.

What can my teen do after completing AI Expert?

They'll have the skills to enter AI/ML hackathons, contribute to research projects, build portfolio-worthy applications and pursue university CS or AI courses with a significant head start. Many students continue to Data Science or more advanced deep learning.

Will this help with A-Level Computer Science or university applications?

Yes, significantly. The practical projects (trained models, deployed applications) are exactly what Oxbridge, Imperial and top US universities want to see in CS applications. Several of our students have cited Homtutor AI Expert projects in successful UCAS personal statements.
